GROUP BOXING INSTRUCTOR JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position supports the work of the YMCA of Southern Arizona, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities. The Group Boxing Instructor is responsible for instructing group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. Effectively builds community within the class, and modifies class as needed to meet varied health, ability and cultural needs. Through intentional interactions the Group Exercise Instructor will model excellent customer service in order to contribute to the overall success of the department, branch, and organization as a whole.  

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A GROUP BOXING INSTRUCTOR:

  • Creates a safe environment in which all individuals feel welcomed and respected; build relationships with and among members and program participants.
  • Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, that align with the healthy living program goals and objectives.
  • Understands different health needs; observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
  • Asks and answers questions and displays empathy in support of helping member and program participants build confidence to achieve their health and wellness goals.
  • Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants.
  • Keeps accurate class attendance records.
  • Maintains working knowledge of health and wellness trends.
  • Provides exceptional customer service by exceeding guest expectations. Consistently greets every person who enters the YMCA (by name, if known) and recognizes all members and guests when they leave.
  • Engages in active listening with prospects, members and program participants in order to build relationships, understand an individual's goals and interests and takes the initiative to ensure they have a positive experience.
  • Utilizes available resources to provide accurate information about membership, programs, and facilities.
  • Follows and enforces all YMCA procedures and policies, including personnel guidelines, safety guidelines, facility access procedures and membership policies. Carries out emergency plans as appropriate.
  • Effectively communicates unusual situations and unresolved issues to the appropriate member of leadership ensuring the best interest of all parties involved.
  • Initiates appropriate actions to maintain safety, cleanliness and organization throughout the facility, with priority being the health and wellness department.
  • Effectively engages with diverse groups of people with different abilities and backgrounds.
  • Familiar with the mission statement and core values of the YMCA. Models the core values while working and communicating with other staff members.
  • Knowledgeable and supportive of the YMCA Annual Campaign.
  • Attends and remains current on all mandatory training and staff meetings.
  • Maintains all job-related certifications on-file.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS TO BE A GROUP BOXING INSTRUCTOR:

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of experience as certified group exercise instructor
  • Current base national (ACE or AFAA), YMCA, AEA Aquatic Fitness certification or speciality group exercise certification.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Intermediate knowledge of technology.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Completion of YMCA’s online training within seven (7) days of hire.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends.
