RESIDENT CAMP UNIT LEADER JOB DESCRIPTION:

Resident Camp Unit Leader positions are open at this beautiful 300-acre camp in Oracle, Arizona, just outside of Tucson. On-campus housing is available, which includes utilities. This position supports the work of the YMCA of Southern Arizona, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities. The Resident Camp Unit Leader is responsible for the overall development, care, and safety of a single unit of campers and staff. This position leads a group of up to 12 staff members and leads a unit of up to 50 campers. This position will be involved in scheduling evening programs, assessing camper and staff needs, performing evaluations, and any other tasks that goes into the well-being of the staff and campers.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A RESIDENT CAMP UNIT LEADER:

  • Provides leadership and models excellent customer service to provide a welcoming environment for all staff, members and guests by following customer service best practices.
  • Delivers a personalized approach when engaging with program participants that creates a positive experience. This includes (but is not limited to) introductions to other YMCA program areas and services.
  • Ensures all staff are following proper techniques in childcare.
  • Effectively engages with diverse groups of people with different abilities and backgrounds.
  • Creates and fosters strong relationships with YMCA staff, members, program participants and guests.
  • Takes ownership through seeking to understand concerns and successfully takes actions to resolve each unique situation. Notifies appropriate leadership in a timely manner to ensure the best outcome for all parties involved.
  • Has the ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations while adhering to the safety policies and procedures set by the YMCA of Southern Arizona
  • Assist with programming activities, to include: shooting sports, aquatics, general activities, arts & crafts, team building, business administration, and challenge courses.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance plans. Initiates and oversees maintenance of equipment to ensure high program quality and creates proposals for leadership about programmatic needs.
  • Provides supervision for and initiates appropriate actions to maintain safety, cleanliness, and organization throughout the facility with priority in assigned program area.
  • Knowledgeable and adept about the rules and guidelines for caring for youth in a camp setting.
  • Works with leadership to create staff schedules based on programming needs.
  • Follows and enforces all YMCA procedures and policies, including personnel guidelines, safety guidelines, facility access procedures and membership policies. Carries out emergency plans as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS OF A RESIDENT CAMP UNIT LEADER:

  • At Least 21 years of age.
  • Current Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Current CPR, AED, & First Aid certifications or completion within thirty days of hire.
  • Completion of YMCA online training within 7 days.
  • High school degree or GED.
  • At least two years of experience leading and working with children in a resident camp setting.
  • Background in childcare preferred.
  • Camper First mindset.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations and/or the ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Ability to pass a drug screen.
  • Excellent Customer service skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends.
