Description

COOK JOB DESCRIPTION:

This position supports the work of the YMCA of Southern Arizona, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Cook is responsible for providing high quality food, dining, and cleaning/sanitation services for the Youth Development Department within budgeted guidelines. This position will be involved with many tasks that go into the well-being of the youth and staff while adhering to safety systems and processes.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A COOK:

  • Executes kitchen activities such as food preparation, kitchen organization, pantry restocking, dish washing, and equipment sanitation.
  • Models excellent customer service to provide a welcoming environment for all staff, members, and guests by following customer service best practices.
  • Effectively engages with diverse groups of people with different abilities and backgrounds.
  • Assists in planning menus and snacks,
  • Prepares and apportions foods, utilizing food surpluses and leftovers.
  • Executes the maintenance and cleaning of kitchen, dining, and stockroom areas and equipment to ensure a healthy and safe environment.
  • Performs opening, set-up, closing, tear-down, and side work of necessary equipment.
  • Executes specified number of servings to be made from any vegetable, fruit, protein, grain, beverage, and dessert to control portion costs.
  • Operates industrial kitchen equipment.
  • Acts to maintain safety, cleanliness, and organization throughout the facility with priority to assigned area.
  • Knowledgeable and adept about the rules and guidelines for food handling.
  • Wash dishware and glassware and other implements by hand, when necessary.
  • Empty and clean trash receptacles.
  • Rotate dishes to reduce wear and tear on resources.
  • Clean up spills and broken glassware immediately.
  • Report all sanitation or janitorial issues to appropriate party.
  • Maintain professional manner and appearance.
  • Attends all relevant training meetings and training events.
  • Follows all YMCA procedures, policies, guidelines, and protocols.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS OF A COOK:

  • At Least 18 years of age.
  • Pima County Food Handler Certificate
  • Current CPR, AED, & First Aid certifications or completion within thirty days of hire.
  • Current Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Mantoux/Tuberculosis test results on file
  • Completion of YMCA online training within 7 days.
  • High school diploma or GED. Culinary associates degree or program certificate preferred.
  • At least one year of relevant experience working with large group cafeteria and/or family-style service.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Display a positive attitude toward children, families, and staff with a willingness to help others and demonstrate good communication skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings and afternoons.
